You always hear nightmare stories of people traveling with their bikes and ending up in more pieces than they originally packed. I am going to run through how I packed my bike. And it is also a beautiful way not to pay to fly your bicycle again. Yes, this is a pretty unique situation, but you can save a lot of money if you travel a lot. For instance, last year, I traveled more than 50,000 miles, and I saved about 4,000 dollars using this technique.
It may be different from the bike bag you’re using, but there should be a few tips you might be able to pick up on. Not only for packing the bike to ensure it gets the other side safely but also for rebuilding it correctly on the other side. So if you can get any tips from this article, you could probably save yourself a bunch of money.
So what I use a bike travel case. The first thing you will do is find the giant hockey goalie bag to put your bike inside it. My bike bag is a combination of a hard and soft case. It protects the bike where it needs to. The case itself comes with wheel bags, but I double wheel bag. I also add a few extra padding for wheels and around the top tubes, tape, velcro tape velcro, tools to take the bike apart, and, most importantly, a marker.
If you go shopping at a store, you may want to take your bicycle to the store ahead of time to make sure that the frame would fit in the bag.
The first thing to do before you do anything else to your bike is to take your pedals off while your bikes are still standing there. Trust me on this because I’ve learned the hard way. And it is a very complicated thing to do. Most people do it the wrong way.
The next thing is not as crucial as the petals but still very important. That is where the marker comes in handy. We want to make sure that our seats and bars are in the same spots when we put them back. This allows us to make sure everything is the same height when we put them all back together. These two things will save a lot of time.
Then it would help if you took both grips off the handlebars. Removable grips make it very, very easy to travel by your bike. After that, you should take off the brake levers. When you do this as often, it is going to be a rapid process after a while.
After you have the grips and the brakes off the handlebars, then it’s time to take off the front wheel. Here you can also use a pad to make an excellent place to put down the bike.
The next thing is taking off the back wheel. You should take the back axle and put it back in the frame, and hang the chain on it. In this way, you can keep everything in place. And also, to give yourself a much room in the bag as possible, you can take off the back brake and then put the bolts back in the adapter because you do not want to lose them.
Once you have all that stuff off, it is time to take off the handlebars. So you need to pull off the top cap and loosen the stem and remove that whole assembly. You can take the handlebars entirely off, set them aside, and then you can pull the fork out. What is essential here you should make sure that you keep all the headset parts in place. And then, you can take all the headset parts and put them back on the steer tube in the order that they go. Then you put the top cap on top to make sure everything stays in place again. That way, you will not lose anything.
The first thing to go into the bike bag is your fort. It would be best if you put it face down with the break up in the back. The second thing that goes in the bag is the frame. It would be best if you put it in diagonal. To do that, first put the back end in first, then squeeze in the front end. When you put the frame in on a diagonal, you have extra room.
Next to things to go in the bag are your helmet and your shoes. I usually put my helmet back where there’s lots of room, and then the shoes go in the front. Then you can take your packing material and your bike pad put in the bag.
If you travel by bike a lot, the center lock rotors are seriously the best invention that I’ve ever found. The rotor comes off with one bolt, and then you should put that back on the wheel so you do not lose it. Any time you could travel with your rotors off, you’re going to save yourself a headache because chances are they’re always going to get bent.
To squeeze your bike, you need to let all the air out. Letting all the air out is never a problem. It would help if you put your back wheel in first, and since it’s the first wheel in, you should put it in a wheel bag. That way, it has a little bit of protection between the frame and the wheel. But in case of anything falling out of the rear hub, make it trapped inside the wheel bag.
You should let the air out because it makes the wheel small enough to fit in the bag. Another tip for air travel let the air out of your tires protect the rims to make sure they do not push up against your bike or anything. Again back wheel goes in first, and the front wheel goes in second.
Next, there should be a pocket made for grips and pedals, and you can take the drips and pebbles and put them in that pocket. The handlebars are the last things to go in, and you squeeze the stem in between some spokes, lay it on top, then shimmy things around until you get it all zipped up.
Once everything is in the bag nice and tight, you can put the rotors outside in a separate bag to keep everything clean. Then you can put your tools in the outside pocket.
Now that everything’s packed up! It’s time to head to the airport.
