There is something that kind of annoys me; I am a humanities major, so most of my friends are book snobs. I have a Kindle, and a lot of them say like “Oh, I don’t know how you can do it, but a Kindle isn’t the same. You can’t feel the pages between your fingers. You can’t smell the books; it’s just a poor experience compared to a real book.”
However, there should be a right time and place for both physical books and Kindle. For instance, if I am home on a comfy chair, then sure, physical books are better. I know there is something about turning pages. When you finish your book, you see and feel all the pages you went through.
I obsessively always had a book in my bag wherever I went. Sometimes I would have 2 or 3 books with me just in case because I might finish the book I was on and need another book to read. I couldn’t go back home and get another one all the time! Furthermore, I remember the day I made an emergency run to the book store to buy the next book in the series I was reading.
On the other hand, Kindle can be a godsend sometimes when I am standing on the metro with one hand holding the handrails. Also, while I am traveling, I don’t prefer carrying two or three heavy books with me. But most importantly, when I lie in my bed and feel lazy, I don’t want to use both of my hands to hold the book and turn the pages. On the other hand, nobody wants to get tendonitis in their arms when they read Dostoyevsky. Last, I can even use my Kindle when I do cardio at the gym. Of course, I could also bring a book to the gym and do the same thing, but I feel like it would be less impractical. By the way, I watch Netflix most of the time while I am on the bike at the gym. I have just started a new series with a bunch of episodes, and while watching it, I had lost 10lbs last month.
Instead of watching something at the gym, I have another excellent option, audiobooks! They’re perfect for work out. Sometimes, I feel like I’m in a lecture when I listen to audiobooks. So that’s why I only listen to audiobooks if I find my favorite narrators. Finding an extraordinary book that is read by my favorite narrators’ proper voice is a remarkable experience for me.
Besides, some people think that they don’t have time to sit down and read a book. That’s why they always consume their books in audio form. So if there were no audiobooks, there are some people in the world that never read.
To summarize, I was an e-reader enemy until I truly used one. Now I am taking my Kindle anywhere, and it’s been a few weeks since I read a paper-based book. Probably I will never go back and stop using my Kindle because I move a lot. Believe me, nothing is worse than boxes of books. Plus, if you don’t have a lot of space in your place, Kindle saves a lot of room. I unloaded about three large boxes of books at a used bookstore recently two weeks ago. I now have enough space to move into my apartment. Now that most of my library is on my Kindle. I have a whole library inside of having a full bookshelf. There is also something satisfying about having a small library in my pocket.
Books are just books and books are great. However, Kindle kills fewer trees. It just looks like a book page pressed up against the glass. I love it.
